They are popular in such applications as ore processing in mining and metallurgy industries, in agricultural industry, for grinding construction materials or their primary components, in chemical and petrochemical processes, and in other industries where grinding is the main type of production process.

The grinding in the rod mill is coarse, with rather large inclusions in the output material. The main grinding operation in such a mill is performed by metal bars the diameter of which is usually within 40 to 70 mm, and the length is 1700 millimetres.

The mill design is a drum to be filled with the raw material. The drum is designed as a hollow cylinder lined with special plates for the shell lining. It is provided to protect the drum surface against premature wear and friction against its walls. The drum interior is separated with a special bulkhead to isolate the compartments where the finder grinding is performed from those where the coarse grinding is executed. On both sides the drum is provided with special covers which are designed for the raw material charging and discharging. The covers are equipped with special screw-type guide members.

The rod mill operation is fairly simple. The raw material is charged into the charging compartment, and the drum begins to rotate. During this rotation the milled raw material is fed to the second opening for discharge by means of the guides, and thus the whole cycle is repeated.
