Concrete placing machine maintenance

The uninterrupted operation of these units is guaranteed by timely maintenance. Here are some recommendations:

During each visual inspection chain gears should be checked and their tension should be regulated using tensioning devices; any slack tension of chains may result in impacts in the chain gear, sprocket teeth jumping and, consequently, gear damage; any overtension impedes the drive operation.

The following rules are applied to maintenance of the concrete placing machines with belt feed­ers in addition to general rules:
the position of the belt on the drum should be monitored; in case of any excessive belt sagging both sides of the tensioning drum shall be tightened uniformly as otherwise its slippage is possible after loading of the concrete mix; it the belt moves aside, the tensioning drum side from which it moved away shall be tightened as the belt moves to the side where dis­tance between the drums is greater; the feeder belt shall be checked – there should be no burrs on its surface and edges; and the belt end connection parts shall not protrude beyond their edges; otherwise belts fail prematurely.

In case of proper maintenance and correct concrete mix filler size which shall not exceed 2/5 of the outlet slot of the bin, the feeder belts operate without any failures.
Any worn belts shall be replaced. To replace them, release the bolts connecting the feeder with the bin and release the belt tension. Once the belt joint is disconnected, or the feeder is removed (if the joint is vulcanised), the belt is easily removed and a new belt is installed. In this case spe­cial attention shall be paid to symmetry of position of the belt in relation to longitudinal axis of the feeder.

Once the feeder is removed, the belt shall be tensioned on it, the drive chains shall be connected and the feeder shall be broken in in idle mode while the belt movement shall be observed, and the belt shall be re-tensioned periodically.

The surfaces of the belt and driven rubber-coated drum shall be checked for traces of oil and other substances which may disturb the engagement of the belt with the drum. To improve the engagement, one may use gro­und colophony spreading it over the driving drum surface. If the belt slips on the driving drum, its rubber-coated surface may get greased. In this case it shall be sanded using a coarse emery paper or polishing machine.

During operation the condition of seals between the feeder belt and the bin shall be checked at regular intervals. If any gaps are detected, they shall be eliminated. It is done by releasing the rubber gaskets, moving them down and tightening them again. If there are any gaps, the concrete mix may get under the belt onto the belt supporting sheet and drums which results in quick belt abrasion.

After visual inspection of the machine and removal of defects the state of all drives and vibrators shall be checked. The drive shall be tested 2 or 3 times, and vibrators shall be tested for a few seconds. If the drives are not operable, or voltage is absent, the operator shall notify the shift foreman about it. If any knocking or noises are heard in the drive components, their causes shall be determined, they shall be repaired or the defective part shall be replaced.
