Screw conveyor: design and operating principle

Conveyor is a connecting link in most of production lines. The Strommashina designs and manufactures various conveyor types, including a screw conveyor. A screw conveyor is a stationary material-handling system the operating member of which is a screw imparting progressive movement to the material. As a rule, screw conveyors are used for handling dust-like, powder-like, granular (and more seldom – fine) materials to the distance of up to 30 m horizontally and up to 25 m vertically. The screw can be located either in closed or open housing. An open housing is used in cases where the material is odourless and is not dusty. A screw conveyor capacity is high enough and can amount up to 100 tons per hour.
The screw conveyor is traditionally used for handling cement, dry sand, gypsum and lime.
Screw conveyor advantages:

- leak-tightness (in closed housing);
- convenient intermediate discharging;
The screw conveyors are designated based on the cylindrical housing inner diameter. Intermediate supports are used for screw conveyors of significant length (determined in each case individually), "ВКПО" marking is applied onto the screw conveyor in such cases.
Standard design of charging and discharging fittings can be used, or it can be manufactured based on Customer's requirements specification. The standard fitting attachment flange design (for connection to bins, mixers, batchers, shut-off and control valves) is detailed below.
The screw conveyor fittings can be connected to the adjacent process equipment units using 100 mm dia. flexible corrugated inserts (industrial hoses).
Screw conveyor price calculation
The input data necessary for calculating the screw conveyor price:
- cost of power-drive station;
- cost of support assembly;
cost of the required amount of linear meters of the screw conveyor (for ВКПО model screw conveyor – with an intermediate support – it is necessary to add the cost of the intermediate support).
The following data is necessary for complete calculation of the screw conveyor design cost:
- handled material type, particle size
- necessary capacity
- angle of inclination of screw
- length of operating part of the conveyor (from charging fitting to discharging fitting)
- drive arrangement (pulling or pushing type)
